Alexei Navalny (Алексей Анатольевич Навальный) was born on June 4, 1976, in Butyn, Moscow region.

Education: Law, Peoples' Friendship University, 1998.

1999-2001: Studied securities and exchanges at the State Finance Academy

2000: Joined the Yabloko party

2004: Founded and helped lead the Moscow Defense Committee against infill construction

2004-2007: Led the Yabloko party in Moscow. From 2006-07, he was a member of Yabloko's federal council.

2005: Joined the Public Council of the Moscow's Central Administrative District

2005: Co-sponsored the youth organization "DA! - Democratic Alternative”

2006: Launched "Political Debates" with Masha Gaidar and Sergei Kazakov. The project organized public meetings with political figures.

2007: Launched the Narod (People) movement under the banner of "democratic nationalism"

2007: Expelled from Yabloko for "damaging the party and nationalistic activities"

2008: Founded the Union of Minority Shareholders and began buying up small numbers of shares in major Russian companies, including Surgutneftegaz, Transneft, Rosneft, Gazprom Neft, TNK-BP, Sberbank and VTB. He has since worked actively to improve transparency in these and other companies.

2009: Adviser to Kirov Governor Nikita Belykh, a former Union of Right Forces leader. Created a fund to support the governor's initiatives.

2009: Named Vedomosti's Person of the Year

2010: World Fellow at Yale University

November 2010: Published confidential Transneft documents on his blog, accusing the company of stealing $4 billion

December 2010: Launched the anti-corruption website "RosPil"

2011: Famously dubbed United Russia "the party of crooks and thieves"
