Mother's letter:

My name's Ekaterina. I have three children. My elder son Sasha has bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. Fortunately there is an excellent way to help such children — cochlear implantation. This operation helps restore the sense of hearing. But the operation is just the first stage. After the cochlear implantation children need a long period of rehabilitation that may take a few years. The rehabilitation course involves regular intensive classes with hearing professionals.

Now I'd like to tell you about our family. Sasha was born in due time. The first hearing screening didn't identify hearing loss. Sasha was vaccinated and visited pediatricians and other specialists like other children. However soon he began to lose his sense of hearing. It's not possible to find the reason now. We noticed that he didn't react to any sounds and didn't even answer to his name. After numerous medical examinations we got the diagnosis: bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss. It was a shock. Our son was so little but he couldn't hear anything! In Audiology center in Moscow we were offered cochlear implantation and we agreed. Sasha was operated when he was three years old. Today he is six. He still has some problems with speech. For example he can't pronounce a few letters and some word endings. Moreover, his listening and comprehension skills aren't developed enough as he can't understand the meaning of long phrases. Sasha will have to go to school soon, but he still has so many problems.

There are no hearing specialists in our town. Fortunately we got to know about the rehabilitation center "Tosha & Co" where children with similar diagnoses take rehabilitation courses. But this center is private so it doesn't receive state funding. Our family can't afford to pay for the rehabilitation course because it's too expensive for us. We have three children. Besides our house is being repaired now which requires huge financial spendings. Sometimes our spendings even exceed our income.

But first of all I need to help my elder son catch up with his peers. Most of all I don't want him to feel himself worse than others. That's why we apply for financial support. This rehabilitation is very important for us. Please, help our son attend rehabilitation course in the center "Tosha & Co" in Fryazino.

Thank you very much! Wish you and your family health and prosperity.

Best regards, Ekaterina and all my family

Speech therapist's conclusion:

cochlear implantation was made in 2012. The boy selectively contacts unknown people. He is not interested in work with teachers, sometimes even protests. Sasha can hear all sounds of speech range. Vocabulary is very poor, contacts mostly with the help of gesture language. He has good imitation ability, can repeat what he hears even if he does not recognize the meaning. General development is delayed in comparison with normal hearing level.
